The heavy breeds, Orps and Cochins tend to layer later, like 6 months or so.
I got my Silkie when she was about 9-10 months old and she was laying already. I don't know when she started though.
Sex Links are supposed to be good layers, but I would think that they should start between 20 weeks (5 months) -6 months.

With my birds, Obelisk could start at 6 in the morning and lay an hour later each day until she took a break after her egg was laid at 8PM. Then she'd start up again at 6. It depends on the bird. Obelisk is a Leghorn.
