Really?? Walmart has a "funeral" department?

£ (British Pounds for those without a UK keyboard) indicates that you bought a coffin in the UK? They are usually much less fancy than those offered by Walmart. Brits don't go for the double lid and curved top. So I would expect them to be cheaper but you did well at £70.

I'm not so sure about that. This one came from the UK:

May not have a double lid or a curved top, but it made a great coffin table.

I wonder what happens to coffins at crematoria. The bodies are burned together each day but are the coffins sold back to the funeral directors for resale as new?

Funeral homes are "recycling" coffins for viewing and then put the person in "cardboard boxes" for cremation.

70 English pounds....that is cheap! My cousins who works for Wilbert Vault Company, said the funerals with coffins cost right at 10,000 dollars, just for the basic services, open/closing ground, vaults, and funeral and vault company services.

We paid $250 for Ken's cremation box. I can tell you that planning a funeral in advance is no fun at all. Those of you of a certain age may want to look into financing it ahead of time, especially if you are not rolling in dough. Just for a service and the cremation box and cremation it is $4,300.

That looks rather old!

Was there anything inside when it came into your possession?

It was new in about 1987. An elderly lady passed away while vacationing in the UK. She was shipped back in this one, but her family didn't like it, (

) and bought a more modern one for her funeral. Our friend, the mortician gave it to us. We used it as a 'coffin table' for many years. I sold it last year to a friend who goes overboard decorating for Halloween.

I have some better pictures if anyone is interested.

What happens if you dont have money for a coffin and funeral..or cremation?
What DO they do with the body?

In some cases the county will take the body, creamate or bury in an unmarked paupers grave. But the family will have to not make claim or they then become responsible for all the expenses. It' s called body abandonment at the hospital I work at. Happens a lot more than you think. But if the deceased has an estate the county will file for expenses.(which is only right)

My best friend died unexpectedly and it cost me over $2300.00 just for cremation: no service, just a cardboard box for her ashes. And pickup from the hospital, death certificates, every little thing they can charge for they will. I went over it line by line and shaved a grape, but it still cost a bundle.

She was my best friend for over 22 years and had no family. So I did what I had to do. Had a small gathering at the house to celebrate her life. Cost FREE....

I realize this is an old thread but in my area they RENT you a coffin for the service and showing if you choose the body cremated after the service. Sometimes the body is cremated before the memorial/funeral service and a closed rented casket is in front of the room. Also when they cremate bodies they use cardboard or other low cost easily burned containers(like some places use wicker ones) that contain the body when they place it in the cremation chamber. Also here in the states I believe there are laws against more than one body being cremated at once unless it is set up with different chambers to hold individual bodies. There may be an exemption on the multiple body thing if you have a lot of body parts that cannot be easily separated like from a plane accident then they may cremate all the parts together because I know in such instances they sometimes have a communal burial plot for such remains on those instances. OldGuy I am amazed they actually placed the woman in a regular type casket to ship the body state side in. I know at one time they had coffins for transporting like moving containers made to look like a regular casket but made in an obvious way to make a person realize this was for transport only (story I heard that did this happened in the late 60's early 70's) I guess if they wore out or some such then they are distroyed ir perhaps are used for pulpier funerals.
