My niece has 10 hens that are 2-3 yrs old. She doesn't eat the eggs and since I don't have my chickens yet ,she always drops eggs off. The shells are super thin and brittle but not soft. The egg whites are just like water! She gathers daily and it hasn't been hot. Her coop is tiny but they have a huge open air, completely enclosed run. They have free choice oyster shells and eat 100% laying pellets.. Are the eggs safe to eat? Can I feed them to my dogs. My husband will eat them and doesn't want me to cook with them... ty for any information.

Egg albumen is made of high-quality protein and water, so the protein level might be low. The feed should contain 16% - 18% protein. Eggs with a weak, watery albumen are classified as Grade B and are edible, also having no difference in nutrition value from Grades A or AA.

The hen mobilizes 47% of her body calcium to the eggshell, so the calcium level could be low. If the oyster shells are separate from the feed, they may not eat them, so tell your niece to try mixing a handful of oyster shells to the feed. Calcium level in food should be 3%. Also, grit is VERY important and can cause brittle eggshells if not given enough. Hope this helped!
