This all might sound like such a weird, maybe there’s something wrong with me... I do have a pretty intense sense of smell, but this is weird and maybe I’m not the only one. Sooooo
I picked up one of the hens as I was holding her, I smelled a sweet smell coming off of her like a cotton candy. So I leaned in and smelled the back of her neck. It was coming from there no where else. I know I’ve seen threads talking about a sweet smell coming from around the coop but this was one hen.
I’m wondering if anyone has smelled thata sweet smell from one chicken?
here’s the thing I’m no doctor, I have some background it the medical field and I’m also not a vet. But I’m pretty sure even though anatomy is not the same you can draw comparisons. Sorry if this is going down a deductive medical rabbit hole. But stay with me... tell me what you think.
I have a few ideas what it is. now this hen recently came off being a broody hen her babies are still in the yard but I think her hormones might be changing, she’s not paying to much attention to the babies. That would explain some of it. Like humans chickens have an endocrine system and a gland responsible for hormones that evolve egg production And sexual reproduction is the pituitary gland. So that could be the reason for the smell... makes me curious/ kind of makes sense if the other mother hens are giving off this sent and has something to do with helping babies react to there mothers...
I also have no clue still how I’m able to pick these scents up.
someone diabetes... I really hope it isn’t that! We where talking about and someone mentioned yah like diabetic humans sometimes give off a sweet smell when there sugar levels are messed up. Soooo I’m wondering if it’s food there eating and the levels of sugar in there food is to high. just like feeding chickens corn during the summer isn’t a good idea... a farmer told me it highers there body temperature. So I’m wondering if there something in Their feed They can’t process,
anyway before I go on forever what do you guys think? Have you experienced it in your hens?
