Really?

i'm in the same boat i have 30 ranging from 3.5 weeks to 8 weeks old and so far i've got 5 confirmed hens and 5 confirmed roos and 2 that are on the fence and it's to early yet to tell on the younger ones

Hatched 7 of 8 roos last hatch. Have done about the opposite, though. For us it was fine, we need them in the freezer worse than we need more egg layers at present. And I love watching roos grow up -- much more fun....

It was posted recently that Ideal says they never purposefully beef up a straight run order with roos. I doubt most large scale hatcheries would bother doing so. I would imagine that sooner or later some employees would tell if they did, anyway.

Aren't chickens fun?

Silly of a place like TSC to sell straight run BR's. Too many people around who know how to choose mostly pullets. The last buyers are not going to be happy customers.

Of my 9 older chickens, I thought I had for sure 4 roos and maybe on 2 others. Posted them here and was told only 1 was a roo! I'm still pretty positive one of the others is a roo too (his comb/wattle colours don't seem to show well in photos and he acts like one). But while we do want laying hens, we plan to put the roosters in our freezer and our coop is on the overstocked side, so I was actually hoping for a 50% or so split.

You should talk to the neighbors and see how they feel about it. I can legally keep a rooster too. I got four straight run chicks last year, and two were roos. Once they started crowing, I gave them away so I didn't annoy the neighbors. Within a week, I had a couple different neighbors ask me if my roosters were ok, that they hadn't heard them. When I said I'd given them away, they expressed genuine disappointment- they thought it was fun to hear that sound in the morning.

Last time I hatched I had nine hatch and only got two pullets. The surplus roosters were delicious. Nothing's stopping you from trying again for more hens.

Terrible luck but it happens. I only bought pullets just in case. And even though they are sexed I still watch them like they could all end up crowing lol

I already have talked to my neighbor. He is adamant that he wants no crowing waking him up early in the morning. The others don't care I don't think but these are my favorite people. So I'm considering if it does wake him up, housing him in the bathroom at night or just trying to keep the coop dark until a certain time. I don't know what I'll end up having to do though. First he'll have to start crowing
