Greymon sat at a table, staring into his basin. "But master, what if the water ninja figures out?"
"NOT TO WORRY," the voice in the basin boomed, "HE IS TOO STUPID TO KNOW HIS PART. WATER NINJA ARE TOO RARE. WE MUST TAKE THE RISK. THOUGH, IT IS NOT THAT MUCH OF A RISK. THEY WILL NEED TO COMBINE ALL THE ELEMENTS TO ACCESS MY CASTLE. EVEN THEN, THEIR SHADOW NINJA WILL BE OVERCOME BY THE STRONG SENSE OF, SHOULD I SAY, 'HOMELINESS'. SHE WILL DO THE WORK FOR US. THE NINJA DO NOT EVEN KNOW THE LOCATION OF THE COUNCIL CHAIR!"
"Um, master?"
"WHAT?"
"There is ONE who knows."
"CURSE THAT SENSEI! HE WILL BE THE DEATH OF YOU, GREYMON, IF YOU AREN'T CAREFUL."
"Don't worry, Master. he is chained and weak. What trouble could he cause?"
"I WAS NOT BORN LOOKING LIKE THIS YOU IDIOT!"
"Yes, master. forgive my stupidity."
"APOLOGY ACCEPTED...
...THIS TIME."
The dream changed...
A small pool of water sat at the bottom of a hill. Mumakai sat, his legs dangling into the pool. "Why? why did you leave me?" He held out his hand and looked at the scar running up his arm. "Why are soem things the way they are? why did she have to die?" Of couse, stupid, he thought to himself, you cannot change the past. you are stuck at a dead end, training to become a ninja because you have nothing better to do with yourself. Except fight. and die. and take revenge on the murderer of everyone I loved.
Sensei Shalan walked up behind him, his chapped hands clutching and ironwood staff with a glowing ball on its top. "The past is the past, mumakai, and the future is yet to come. We must make the most of our llife that is given us. Everything happens for a reason, and you will have a part to play before your life is over."
"That's reassuring," Mumakai muttered.
"I know." The old man stopped and looked into the pool. "Look at yourself, Mumakai. You sit here, mourning the loss of your beloved, while outside this dojo evil is growing. you MUST find the otehr ninja and unite them, then go to the council chair." he added an emphasis to 'must' by banging his stick against a rock. "You are a ninja of earth, and earth ninja aren't soft. They cannot be broken easily."
"But do they have the will to love, sensei?"
"If they know their place in the world, then yes, they can love."
"Sensei?"
"Yes, my student?"
"Can you tell me about the council chair and the breaking of the Old Ninja Order?"
"Ah, yes, that story is one too grievous to forget..."
