Recall of feeds/foods from Tractor Supply -- Vitamin D deficient, Aflatoxins (Aspergillus related).

I just bought purina feed that smelled alittle funny to me..i hope it wasnt moldy..i put it ib the feed bin in the dark so i couldnt tell..but it smelled ....old and musty..

You can check the code, which is printed on the white strip that forms the bottom of the bag ... much of the purina I'd bought was also crushed into dust, which I wasn't too happy about, and I feared it'd been in the store way too long.

Then how/why does Cargill advertise Purina Feed, http://www.cargill.com/feed/brands/purina/index.jsp

I'm guessin' Cargill has purchased the license to the Purina logo/brand in Romania (at least ~'-)

Just the person to ask, if you don't mind:

1. I realize there are different levels of aflatoxins for different feeds (ranging from 20 ppm to 100 or even 200 ppm) but -- is there not a cap of some kind, so that food intended for any purpose still has some manner of limits?

2. If it's caused by Aspergillus flavus, then couldn't another form of mold be introduced that wouldn't produce aflatoxins? I know it sounds stupid, but I've been playin' w/ this idea for eliminating bad bacteria by encouraging those that are not harmful (the theory being that, at minimum, it'd be better to treat for something easy to kill than be infected by somethin' impossible to ~'-)

I can't find any news on this that's more current than summer 2012 - wouldn't those products have been pulled from the shelves months ago?

They *should* have been, but ... I found eggs in Mom's 'fridge that had been recalled. Called the WalMart she'd just bought 'em at, only to be assured they didn't have any of 'em. Went to the store, and found the shelf still partly filled w/ the same codes. Pulled 'em, went in the back, and in my growing frustration w/ not findin' anybody to complain to? I simply smashed every carton against their walkin cooler's door.

Besides ... these recalls continue to expand into additional products, and other plants ... and many folks keep this stuff on hand for quite some time (like me ~'-)

In at least one of the following three? The affected products were manufactured between May 23 and July 20, 2012, at the Milford, Indiana, Nashville, Tennessee and St. Joseph, Missouri feed plants, and distributed nationwide under the Purina and DuMOR brand names listed below. All products manufactured after July 20 include added vitamin D in their formulation.

Tractor Supply called today, but had no biologist, or scientist of any kind, to refer my concerns to ... only a buyer, who is to call me back w/ answers of some kind ... guess I'll take samples of my own in for testing. In addition to my concerns that I've had two recent outbreaks of what I believe to have been aflatoxin poisoning, and have an undeclared product involved? I'd like to know if the recalled products were sold at my local store, as I've fed my flock exclusively the product sold there ... clearly, it's an issue for anyone that's fed these products, even though they claim 'no illnesses have been reported' as the result of either the Vitamin D deficiency or the aflatoxins.

Guess they've somehow made it safe to go w/o vitamin D, and the calcium that relies upon it, 'n feed afla'substances' after all )-;~
