Recall of feeds/foods from Tractor Supply -- Vitamin D deficient, Aflatoxins (Aspergillus related).

Cindy I knew Purina made Dumor but from a quick web search it appears Purina and Cargill may be owned by the same people (Nestles). It seems to make a difference which country it is in too. I'm not going to spend any more time looking at how they are interconnected, but it seems they are. Even if they are not owned by the same people here in the US, they may license each other to make feeds.

So Cargill & Purina manufacture Dumor for TSC?

Ralston Purina merged w/ Nestlé S.A.'s Friskies PetCare Company to become Nestlé Purina PetCare Company, but ... Purina Mills, LLC, is the animal feeds unit of Land O' Lakes, but ... Land O'Lakes Purina Feed LLC is the name on the FDA Recall for DuMOR
00ae.png
(which appears to have been manufactured for Tractor Supply by Cargill).

I know ... ridiculously confusing, but Cargill's made it all better. You see, they refer to this toxin as 'a naturally occurring substance' that I reckon my birds wouldn't have died from, had I simply told 'em it was an aflasubstance, instead of somethin' so needlessly upsetting as aflatoxin.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - July 26, 2012 - Land O'Lakes Purina Feed LLC has initiated a voluntary recall of certain varieties of poultry feed products with the specific lot codes listed below, due to the lack of added vitamin D in these products. Inadequate levels of vitamin D in a bird’s diet for greater than 2-3 weeks may cause bone weakness, fractures or joint problems, and potentially death, if birds are not exposed to direct sunlight daily. Birds living outdoors may not experience symptoms due to the formation of natural vitamin D that occurs within the bird’s body with exposure to a minimum of 30 minutes of direct sunlight daily.
To date, there have been no reported animal illnesses involving the products below being recalled. The absence of added vitamin D in these products occurred as a result of a formulation software conversion.
"We are working diligently with retailers and distributors to notify customers about this issue and, as a precautionary measure, we urge customers to not feed their flocks these products," said Dave Hoogmoed, Chief Operating Officer. "Instead, please return them to the point of purchase for a refund and replacement feed. We deeply regret the concern and inconvenience this is causing."
The affected products were manufactured between May 23 and July 20, 2012, at the Milford, Indiana, Nashville, Tennessee and St. Joseph, Missouri feed plants, and distributed nationwide under the Purina and DuMOR brand names listed below. All products manufactured after July 20 include added vitamin D in their formulation.

Moldy feed from TS. MY 4th bag of feed from tractor supply was a moldy clump of feed of course it was the stuff at the bottom of the feed bag so I feed my chickens bad feed before hitting the bottom of the bag. I was very mad that it was feed to my chicks but could do nothing about it by the time I found it out.
This is not a recall for moldy feed. The aflatoxin is produced by molds that infest the corn when it is inthe field.

Thanks, didn't know the two were hooked up. I knew I didn't want to go back to Purina! Not on the same subject, but my local organic no soy mash has been getting more powdery (?) and dirty, so I had to make a decision between two other feed outfits. One is a feed store & carries Purina & Nature's Best Organic. I love Nature's Best, but at $35 a bag, it's not in the cards right now. The other is a local feed mill that has been in business for over 100 years. Just decided to go get their 18% game bird & turkey breeder for my chickens. I already feed it to the guineas. It has animal protein and costs $14.15/50lbs. The other store only carries Purina Game Bird and they only get the no animal protein version! It is around $18/50. I will try not to think about the GMO stuff and see how they do for a month. Sure can't beat the price.

If you look deep into it I think you will find that Purina Mills (livestock feed co.), Cargill, Nutrena, Agway, ACCO and Land-O-Lakes are all sister companies.
Now Purina (pet food) is owned by Nestle.

Actually Purina and Land O'Lakes/Purina are brands/subsidiaries of Land O'Lakes cooperative, a Minnesota based farmer-owned cooperative.

Cargill, Acco, and Nutrena are brands owned by Cargill Corporation, a privately held company based in Minnesota.

Purina petfoods was sold to Nestle when Purina filed bankruptcy.
