BYC Café

I'm hoping the chickens can put aside their petty differences -- they have before -- and snuggle up together.
I stuffed 2 of my oldest hens in a double sized nest box (after removing the partition and turning on the seedling heat mats in them). Astrid was content to stay but Amelia kept fighting it. I hope that she stayed in there after I pulled the partition out and they could sit together without sitting on top of each other. I took one of the 5 year old molting triplets and put her in another nest box. She also didn't want to stay. They don't know how good they've got it.

Two of the oldest hens have been sleeping in the two nest boxes. When it's molting season, I don't mind. I think they're done molting, but I'm not going to close the boxes at night until next week, after we have the 0° night they've forecast.

I think everyone is pretty much done molting, thank goodness. The third old lady has had some porcupine molts in the past. This year, not at all like that, thank goodness! In fact, she's already back to laying. She'll be 6 in March, so I was very surprised that she reddened up in the face so early after her molt.

Good morning Cafè. Coffee is ready.

The moon rise last night was beautiful as was the moon set this morning.

The flock seems to be just fine. It's 5F. Astrid was the only girl in the nest boxes this morning.

Young Wyatt had been practicing his crow ever since his 3 brothers left last week. I can easily tell the difference between the voices of all three boys out there. The flock dynamics with the current population is wonderful. The girls are all calm and the boys seem to be patiently waiting for their ladies to start laying before they do too.

Good Morning

Coffee is ready and hot. Snow & cold over there, over here hot and many part of the country is in for fire danger.

Maremma is a special kind of dog ins't it? I saw it on our rural program about having Maremma dog as guardian dog and they so fluffy and beautiful. Do all dogs go away to die or just Maremma?

Have a wonderful day🌻

Had her since a pup but she adored Richard we lost him in August.
I wonder she knew he was gone.
