Ideal also has Production reds which are next to impossible to tell the difference when young.

I would go with the production reds...look a little light and seem to have very light belly/butt. My heritage RIR were never that light. Just my opinion.

From what I've read the Production Reds are the result of crossing a RIR rooster on NHR hens.

I got 12 Barr Rock pullets from Ideal last November. they put in 7 RIR roosters as the packing peanuts. Those chicks look just like the ones I got from Ideal. I'd have to vote that those are RIR's.

I'd guess RIR's on the packing peanuts too-- and most likely roos-- they pretty much guarantee the packers to be roos... but cute nonetheless!

Cute chicks! I got my order from Ideal today too and they sent me 15 of the same little orange roos. They are mean little boogers, had to separate them quick (my order was 10 frizzle cochin banties).

The RIR packing peanuts that I got from Ideal 15 weeks ago are going to the Amish guy down the road tomorrow morning to be processed into my freezer chickens. They were all roosters and I don't need roosters.

My wife won't let me freeze my reds so i guess they will go on craig's list. Might at least get enough to buy some feed. LOL.
