Looking for input following a bout of what I believe was Coccidiosis. My hen was pretty sick last Mon and from what I could tell from this site, it was probably Coccidiosis....yellow runny poop, lethargic, dilated pupils, a bit of stumbling, not walking around, just sleeping on the roost bar, eating and drinking only if I hand fed her. Interestingly enough, I treated her with oregano. Probably another post, but I had no Corid, and Sulmet everyone dislikes due to its harshness. While waiting for the Corid to arrive in the mail next day delivery, I tried holistic methods...Kocci free, fresh oregano by the fistfuls from my garden, AVC and garlic in the water, probiotics and oatmeal. I was trying to keep her in a holding zone. The one thing she ate ravenously was the fresh oregano so I kept giving it to her. Within 6 hours, she was able to stand on her own, and began to peck around and drink on her own. Next day, she was out in the run with the others, although still recovering. I continue to "dose" her with oregano twice daily. As of today, she is doing well...normal poop and energy level. BUT, she has not laid since a week ago last Sat., 10 days. She is just a year old, and was laying fine before, although not as frequently as the other 4. Does the Coccidiosis, or the bout of it, delay laying for this long?? I figured she might lay Sat or Sun, but nothing, not even today. She doesn't appear bound, doesn't act it and her abdomen is soft and same sized as the others. What are your experiences with laying and this parasite?? Thanks for your help!

Illness like this is hard to explain. She could be laying internally or have some reproductive disorder that made her sick. Yellow poop is not normal, and if she has any more of that, you might post a picture. You haven't mentioned her age, and although most cocci is seen in younger chicks, a chicken with immunity problems (such as in Mareks,) could still get it, or be exposed to a new strain, causing infection. A vet can look at a stool sample without seeing the chicken, and tell you if your chicken may have coccidia or worms. If you haven't wormed her, I would recommend Valbazen or SafeGuard liquid goat wormer, 1/2 ml orally, and repeated in 10 days. Bantams can be dosed at 1/4 ml.

Thanks! She is just over a year old. This is what her poop looked like a week ago Mon.

It has gone back to normal the last 5 days or so. I look every morning under where she roosts. The grain store gave me Wazine as a dewormer. It says its for turkeys, chickens, and swine. Any experience on that one?? They seem to carry only the heavy duty stuff there. Haven't used it yet as I have been using DE in their food. I'm assuming I can get one of the others you mentioned online? This all started when we went from 88 to 49 degrees in one day, with pouring, cold rain. Found her soaked through, standing in the rain instead of going in to roost for the night. She appeared deeply chilled and could barely walk. We actually blow dried her, much to our amusement and concern. She was wet to the skin and her body temp. was way cooler than normal. The next morning is when she went south. I wonder if that set things off??

I'll try....hard to catch them in the act! Plus, I'll be running around like a nut today! Will post, though, ASAP. But, I may be taking back my words. Found a poop pile out there with just a smidge of that bright yellow through it. Only one that has been doing that is this hen. It had been normal. Glad the Safeguard is coming. Will eliminate worms at least.

Got it...

Streak is more white than yellow, but still not the pure white that you occasionally see as the norm. Tinged yellow a bit. Can't believe I did this, but actually scooped it up and went through it. No visible signs of worms, but I know that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Let me know.....

That looks much better than the other picture.

Yes, it does but still going to worm her. Stuff should arrive today. But I have a question....I have been reading many of the wormer threads, and in one you posted you dose .23cc/lb. This hen is 5.8 pounds so that would mean 1.38cc for her. That is a huge difference from the 1/2 ml or cc suggested above. I guess I am confused as to which??? It is Safeguard that is coming.
