I'm looking for a new rooster after my last one gave his life in service. I want a pretty bird, in the 7-8 pound range and likely to fight for his girls. If he carries setting genes for his daughters, all the better.

All I have right now is a Silver Phoenix and while he's gorgeous, I am not hatching any of his babies with my blue laced red wyandotte lady :p

Suggestions welcome! :)

I had a Copper Maran. Best protector of the flock I had. Fought 3 dogs all at once, all for his flock.

First, my sincere condolences for your previous rooster, it sounds like he did his job well!
Second, I've heard of exceptional roosters in nearly every breed. From a Buff Orpington roo, who literally fought and drove off a full-grown bear, to a wee Bantam who took down a hawk.
Third and last, what I learned from my own experiences, is that introducing a young rooster to older hens works about half the time. I'd say the personality of the roo and the hens is the biggest factor in successful integration!
(The best/easiest way to introduce a rooster is still raising the hens and roo together!)
I'm not sure if an older/more experienced rooster would be easier..? You may just need to try a few. Please let me know how it goes! Good luck!!
