Recommend/tell me about some great chicks for egg layers

Brown Eggs: Rhode Island Red/Production Red, Black Australorp, Black Sexlink, Barred Rock, Buff Orpington (Buff Orps are excellent fall/winter/spring layers, but will likely go broody and quit laying during the summer months).

White Eggs: White Leghorn (by far the best), Buff/Black Minorca, Brown Leghorn, Ancona.

Also, Easter Eggers/Ameraucanas/Araucanas can be very good layers too. It all depends on the strain. Each hatchery has their own special "recipe," so it can really vary quite a lot. Hatcheries with excellent production strains of Easter Eggers include Ideal Poultry, Cackle Hatchery, and My Pet Chicken.

They're generally pretty big, though not huge. A pound or two bigger than, say, a BR, and their puffy feathers make them look even bigger than they really are. If you get one from a good breeder, they will look like monsters to you. My hatchery girls look to be about 15 inches tall from the ground to their backs, 7-7 1/2 inches across their wings looking straight down at them, and remind you of basketballs in shape unless they flatten their feathers out, then they are more like the shape you think of when you think "chicken."

All my older neighbors that grew up with chickens exclaim over how big they are. Their chickens were always "Domineckers."
