White Australorp if you want eggs. They are a cross of Black Australorp which are known for being calm and easy-going (for chickens). And White leghorn which lay white eggs.

Or any of the Polish if you don't mild getting half as many eggs. They are also less excitable than the other white egg layers. I think - I haven't had them or paid too much attention.

Most of the rest of the common or somewhat common white egg layer breeds are much, much, much more reactive in their behavior (than some of the brown egg laying breeds). I like that but don't recommend it for typical beginners. Even if you don't want really friendly birds, it is easier to take care of calmer birds. They do need more protection from predators, though.

Even more important to a good first experience than which breed is to set things up with as much margin as you can - more space per bird (than the minimum recommended for backyard flocks - that is itself much more than most coop suppliers use) , some investment into easy to use feed storage, feeders, waterers, poop management, and so on.

I agree there is no difference under the shell between brown eggs and white eggs but if getting chickens that lay eggs with white shells helps a wife feel listened to then get chickens that lay white eggs.
