Somewhat new to chicken breeding but getting more serious for next year. This year I have been breeding some BYM chicks, but im wanting to switch to sex links for next year so im looking into what crosses I should invest in. I am already planning on having a small setup of Black stars (Rhode Island Red x Barred Rock), but I thought I might be able to keep back some of my current BYM chicks since the rooster I currently have is a Barred Rock and I know the barring present in some of the female BYM can be used to breed sex links.

So my question is what breed(s) would you recommend I purchase for the rooster if I am going to keep back some barred mixed breed hens. I am debating between getting a good dual purpose/laying breed, since that is what I am mostly selling my BYM pullets as, or getting a fancy/exotic breed to try and attract people interested in more exotic looking pullets rather than basic blacks and browns.

Figured I'd ask here and see what everyone thinks. Are there any unique or interesting breeds you'd recommend I look into or do you think its better to stick with something simple but reliable, less so for me to keep but more what you'd like to see if you were purchasing pullets.

A Black Copper Marans roo with dark egg gene would darken or add dark speckles to all your eggs every generation. Breeding with your Barred Rock hens gives you what some hatcheries call 'Midnight Majesty's' or use him for Olive Eggers.
A Blue or Splash roo for fun colors.
