Howdy all,

I've got 5 chickens- 2 x silkies, sussex coronation, isa brown and a plymouth barred.Adults and all under a year old.

My two silkies have gotten bumble foot and they are currently being treated for that, the vet has recommended I change my perches. So i've removed the perches whilst i look for replacements, I lived in Melbourne and we're currently in stage 4 coronavirus restriction so to get anything will take some time.

Look forward to your advice.

What i've found on google is the perch should be 2in (4cm) wide, flat with rounded edges. Thoughts?

I use a 2x4. But I also live in an area where we have winter 5-6months out of the year, so I put the 2x4 so that the chickens can roost on the wider side to keep their feet warm and avoid frostbite.

Same here - we also have a ladder built up to ours which some use while others choose to be dive bombers

Sounds about right.

2"x4" board with the 2" for them to roost on and I also use a few big tree branches (2" to 2.5" diameter) that I've cut and use those in the run for them to roost on too.

I use large tree branches, both in the coop and in the run. The rounded shape is more natural and comfortable on their feet. If you have woods nearby, branches are easy to come by, and easy to do so while staying COVID-conscious and away from people (vs. going into a store to buy lumber).
