Recommendations on window covers for the chicken coop

I'm not sure what 1/4" hardware cloth you've got that snaps easily. I did my entire run in it and it's tough stuff. Maybe it depends on the brand? My default answer would be 1/4" HWC and build sealing shutters from scrap wood.

But it sounds like you're not afraid to spend a little cash to get a transparent solution. You could look for actual windows on the cheap if you live near a Habitat for Humanity ReStore (or other second hand building center).

Polycarbonate (Lexan is a brand name) should not degrade if it's intended/made for long term UV exposure. You can by sheets of greenhouse panels, they seal well and are easier to work with than glass:

Or you just buy glass sheets and glaze your own windows.

I've never worked with acrylic so I can't comment on that.

Good luck!
