Recommended Breeds?

If you want good layers, i would go with Barred rocks, ours lay even in winter months and they are friendly. Easter Eggers are fun, if you want a few green eggs.

I got a mix of EE and BR, wanting colorful eggs. I particularly like the EEs. The fluffy lighter colored EEs are especially sweet, while the darker ones that look like wild birds are more wild, go figure, but fascinating in coloration and behavior. So nice to tell each apart very easily. The BR are very bold and friendly, "chicken machines." They learned to do everything faster and are much bigger.

my ee lays xxl brown eggs and is very friendly. bo are child frendly too. My Dellaware and sex links don't do well with them though. I am going to try Polish crested. I heard the crested chickens are very dosile...

try googling chicken breed chart and use Henderson's chicken Breed Chart, it is very useful

I don't think you can go wrong with Buff Orpingtons. They are very calm and lay a nice brown egg. They will also go broody if you're interested in getting a rooster and letting some eggs hatch. The roosters are also generally well-mannered. If you're looking for colored eggs, then the Easter Egger is your bird!

I like a flock that has calm gentle dual purpose birds. My buff orpingtons and most of my EE get along well with rare scrapping. I've had other dual purpose and some production type layers that all ended up in time out pen before the soup pot for bad behavior. I have had some lovely cornish also, these were not great layers though. Good luck and have fun.
