Hello from Central Missouri! My name is Kacey, and I started raising chickens in 2009. I was living in Texas at the time. We moved from Central Texas in 2019, and I sold everything chicken, plus them as well. I wasn't sure about wanting to restart in a state with snow! I was spoiled with Texas weather. I still haven't pulled the "trigger" yet to start again. But I sure have some urges for baby chicks every spring! I learned so much from this website when I started with the birds. Many great folks to come along side for help, hints and suggestions. Thanks for letting me rejoin

I've only had chickens in a part of the country that gets an actual winter. I cannot fathom having to raise chickens in a state like Texas! Keeping hens cool in blistering heat is much harder than giving them a dry draft free coop that they can keep themselves warm in.

Welcome back. I agree with @DobieLover. I would much rather deal with cold weather than hot weather with chickens. It is far less dangerous for the chickens.

I didn't have that much trouble with the heat. I kept a fan blowing on them circulating in the coop. I also had large outside runs with a top on them, so the sun didn't directly bake on them all day either. I had different breeds, but surprisingly, the ones who had issues were my Delawares.

I read another post today in the Buy/Sell forum of someone in Florida who lost a couple of full-grown Delawares from heat stroke and now trying to sell them all. I've never really paid attention to breeds that do poorly in the heat, but now that's twice in one day.
