If I am going to create my own sex link breed, not buy from the hatchery I will be able to sex them at birth. But, unlike the hatcheries they won't be prolific layers because they won't have been bred through generations of "great" layers. Is that correct? They also shouldn't "flame out" after a couple years as those from the hatchery will. So I shoulh end up with sexable at birth chickens that grow faster than the standard and are good layers, for a long time. Is that all true?

I believe you are correct. To answer your question, though, you'd need to raise the two side by side for comparison. I've made my own Black Sex Links becuause it's just a cool thing to do. They seem to be good layers. Are they as productive as hatchery BSL's? Couldn't tell you. But they are workhorses. Sex Links pretty much pay the feed bill so I can have other pretty birds around.
