I am new to keeping hens. I have just purchased 2 lovely ladies from a local breeder. They are settling in nicely and we are muddling along together nicely with the help of " backyard chickens". We are still having problems with bedtime but they have spent today locked in the coop so hopefully that will help. My main reason for posting is that I was told one of my girls is a red arrow.when I google that it comes back with nothing. Does anyone have any info?

BYC has a very useful learning center

Try looking in the BREED's tab at the top of the page there is a list of a lot of different chickens

Personally I have never heard of a Red Arrow but there are a lot of breeds I have never heard of ....

Welcome to BYC! I've been raising chickens for over 50 years, have had dozens of different breeds, and have read an uncountable number of books and articles on different breeds, and have never heard of a Red Arrow. Maybe whoever told you that is confusing the name with a Red Star (which is one of the labels under which Red Sex Links are sold), or a Red Ranger (which is a hybrid meat chicken). If you will post a picture of her (full body profile showing legs and tail), we can probably ID the breed for you. Good luck with your ladies.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

I have never heard of that either. Must be a Red Production hen of some sort. Locking them in the coop for 2 or 3 days straight will help them learn where home is so they want to return each night to roost there.

Good luck with your flock and welcome to ours!

tanks for the tip. i looked up red sex link and she does look like the picture I saw ,except much prettier ( I could be biased). She has the black arrowhead shape on her tail feathers and she fits the description very friendly and good layer.

If she is a Red Sex Link you should get lots of large, brown eggs from her. Sex Links are egg laying machines. Good luck with your flock.
