Red cedar mulch?

Can chicks have red cedar mulch in the run part of thier coop?

everything i've read in books and online says not to do it, because the ceder releases hydrocarbons or something

Nope. It's really unhealthy for ALL animals (yet, it's marketed for rabbits and dogs!) please don't use it. It can cause major respiratory issues.

If the cedar has been aged and left out in the open air for a year or more it is fine to use, I am currently using a big pile I have that has been outside for 2 yrs and it is not having any affects what so ever on the chicks.

I've heard of people mixing up their shavings 1 bag cedar to 4 bags pine and using that for their grown birds with no ill effects & it helps keep bugs away.
