Hi! One of my chickens has a red cloudy eye with redness around it....she's not acting any different at all...I had read to use triple antibiotic on it...Have I done the right thing? Thanks! MaryAnn

Can you post a picture of the eye? Is the iris itself red and cloudy, or is the redness in the conjunctiva or the tissue around the eye and eyelid? I have used triple antibiotic (neosporin) ointment in an eye during an emergency, when a hen was pecked severely in the eye, but it is preferred to use an eye ointment or drop especially for eyes, since those are sterile. You can get Vetericyn eye wash or eye gel or Terramycin eye ointment in many feed stores. Online one can buy ciprofloxacin eye drops and Vetromycin ointment (same as neosporin.)

A cloudy eye may be a sign of infection, scarring, or a cataract. Chickens may peck at eyes, especially if the pecked chicken cannot see well and bumps into another chicken.

Thanks for the reply! She had been scratching after I put the antibiotic on it...will go tomorrow morning get some vetericyn for her...thanks so very much!
