Red Fox- Can I shoot it?

A red fox got my two best hens this week- I found how he was getting in and secured the area. I watched as he/she tried to get in early this morning but couldn't, so at least safe for now... but wondering if it's legal to shoot these? I'm in Massachusetts. Wouldn't want it to get anymore, and now I'm scared to let the hens out ever.

That would be a good question for your local CO (conservation officer). Some states have nuisance laws where an animal can be taken if it is causing harm, where other states strictly protect wildlife. Your states DNR website should have questions like this in its Q&A section.

In the meantime invest in a good pellet rifle and put a few zingers in her butt!

You can get a nice solar electric fence controller for around $99. Depending on the size of your coop the wire and poles wouldn't add very much more to that price tag.

Last night when I was locking up my girls, I got distracted by the coop and stopped paying attention to my Yorkie. I guess my dog got too curious about the hens and he bumped the wire. Never saw him run so fast in my life. So, I guess my fence works.
