this morning after I cleand out the hen house I was looking at the girls (chickens) in their run and noticed a red glob of something on the ground. So, of course I had to check it out. It was about two inches long by about one and ahalf inches wide. It kind of looked like a gizzard or a big heart from the gibblet pouch you get from a store chicken. It was still warm. Of course I cut it open. Inside was dark red, kind of looked like it had a round ball inside of blood??? Really wierd. I think it might have come from my RIR hen she was sick in spring and hasn't laid since. She also looked alittle punk about a week ago for two days. Could this have been a tumor of some kind and she passed it , one end of it looked like it had been sttached to something? She looks okay, her comb isn't as red as some of the other girls. Anyone know what this was?

Unlikely it is a tumor. My first thought was, her ovary, or some sort of malformed egg. Does not sound good since she had stopped laying; sorry. But then, I have seen chickens pass blood, just as occasionally there will be blood in an egg, and all went well afterwards.

If it looked like a piece of organ meat, and all of your birds are accounted for (meaning nothing came in the night and took one apart), you may have been looking at something left by a predator- a piece of some other animal, dropped from the sky ect. Things passed through vent are usually weird egg material, not pieces of flesh.

I counted again and all ten chiskens are accounted for. My run is covered with chicken wire and there is chicken wire under the dirt as well because there are alot of predators around but I don't think anything can get in. I assumed it was from my RIR but there are 20 week old chickens in there as well. the reason I thought it was from them is it was still warm. It was so wierd.
