I keep a 60 W white light light on 24/7.. I have been doing it like this for years.. there were days last winter when the temp outside was minus 20 F. and my Buff Orpingtons still hit 3 days where I had 100% egg production (35 eggs/35 hens)...
I have a brooder right beside me in my quiet room where I have a light on the very new chicks.. I observe them very often.. as I am on the computor or watching tv etc.. they are oblivious to the light..
when they get tired they go to sleep and when they are awake they are active..
