Jack, my cochin rooster has had a bright red patch on his leg for.. maybe a week now. It's just on the one leg, and just him, no one else in the flock. Any idea what it is? Is it something I should be concerned about, or will this heal up on its own?

Looks like his feathers have been pulled out. Wash area, try some antibiotic ointment(nothing ending in "caine" toxic to chickens). Make sure no chickens are pecking this area. Checked for mites/lice?

I used to have a second rooster, and they fought some, but I rehomed him about two weeks ago. The red spot wasn't there when the other rooster left, though he certainly could have pulled out some feathers. Is it possible it would have taken a few days to get red like that afterwards?

As for the ointment, would neosporin work fine? Just bacitracin, neomycin, and polymyxin B

My feather legged rooster (Langshan) has a patch that looks similar, It's been there a month probably, doesn't look infected or anything. I just figured he lost some feathers... I haven't put anything on it, but it also doesn't look any better. I may go ahead and try some Neosporin also.

Yes,neosporin is fine,as long as there is no pain reliever in it ending in "caine". He may have pulled his own feathers out. He or another chicken has probably been pecking/picking at leg.

Okay, I went out and put some on his leg just now. Thanks for the advice!
