Ok i just rescues another hen yesterday. She is in bad shape. But before I take her to vet I want to know if there is anything I can do to help her. She is missing lots of feathers around her vent, tail and under her wings. She has visible live lice. I already bathed her with dawn. Will do another round in a few days. But her skin is so red and irritated. I want to know what I can do to help with the redness. That and if it's ok to spray her with tea tree oil. (Lice do not like tea tree oil. I use it as preventive measures For My kids.) Any thoughts. She looks miserable.

While lice may not like tea tree oil, I don't think it actually kills them. Killing the lice is required. Dusting is an option, as is Ivermectin. The lice are probably the cause of lost feathers, and irritated skin. Be sure to treat her living space too, whether it be a cage, or coop.

Thank you guys. I will keep up her treatments already got her on a higher protein diet. She is in separate cage. After her bath I did sit with her and whent threw her feathers and used tweezers and picked off as maby lice as i could find and 11th put pure cocoa butter on her irritated skin. She seams to be feeling better. I will clean out cage good every day. I just hope I can get her to feel better.

Using tweezers is better than nothing, but again, not a good option. You can miss one or more with the tweezers. They breed, and lay eggs. The eggs are going to hatch in 7 days. You can use Ivomectin Pour On, 5 drops for a standard chicken, 3 for a bantam, or you can use dust. Repeat in 7 days to kill the hatching nits.

I just had a thought. I have this shampoo called vamoose. It's a lice shampoo thats made to use on kids daily during infestation. it was the only thing that worked when mt kids got lice. So you think it would be ok to use I on my new girl

I wouldn't. It's like those that say to use wood ash. Yes, it will do the job, but the pH is very high, so it's very rough on their skin. The cheapest way, would be to dust her with Sevin Dust, then repeat in 7 days.
