Rate this idea? One red jungle fowl rooster, ten jersey giant hens.

I’ve seen overbred hens at a farm nearby and they look MISERABLE. I would like one roo because we will be free ranging these birds on a fenced-in two acre yard, and we have all manner of foxes, bobcats, and hawks and such about.

So I’d like a rooster for the flock, but I don’t want him to tear my hens up. I’m thinking that if the hens are JG and the roo is red jungle fowl, he won’t be clawing them up so much.

Thanks!

FYI we have been off the scene for a while, and are getting all new chicks in the spring. Had a neighbor tear down our fence, so we had to rehome our flock to a neighbor while we got that settled. We will be starting fresh this spring.

I can see your reasoning. However, he may still have favorites with bare backs. In that case, rotate the hens with him so his favorites get a rest.

I don't know if he would kill a fox, but he might scare one well enough.

A red jungle fowl rooster wouldn’t be able to do very much about a fox or bobcat. For that matter, I don’t think any rooster could, maybe barring a liege fighter or indio gigante.

I think your idea would work very well for flock dynamics though.

Bare backs tend to bother people more than they bother chickens. Some hens are much more prone to them than others. Check your roosters feet and nails for symmetry. Irregular feet can cause problems.

I don't really thing it is a breed issue, I think it is an individual bird issue.
