(I'm saying this with love and concern - don't take offense at it)

Cocci (short for Coccidiosis) is a parasite animals get from picking at the ground.
Do a web search for a good description.

Grit is small stones that the chickens eat that helps them grind up their food.
Chickens, as you know, have no teeth. Normal free ranging chickens get grit
naturally from the ground. Caged birds get it from their feed, as a supplement,
or not at all.

First thing tommorrow call all your local feed stores and find amprol, sulmet, or
an equivalent. You can also try local vets.

When you say it's getting worse what do you mean?

I know what grit does I meant when you said feed a lot of grit I thought that it had some special effect on cocci----

My chickens have never had cocci but I guess I should know it is a parasite, probably somewhere back in my brain I do--but first response to my own chicken(without searching old posts-GUILTY)------

Well anyway-back to the drawing board there-point taken- my bad

I have three chicks in a small pen in the house and after I fed them red lettuce there was watery beet colored poop in cage---tonight I noticed the one bird who is sick and took her out-she is not getting worse at this moment- it is worse from 2 days ago(bloody clots)

the other 2 are fine and I have her seperated-I hope she makes it through the night-I have not experienced anything like this before-it is so strange-her poop is just a red blood clot nothing else

thanks for your help

Thanks for the link PC

My apologies on accusing you of not knowing what grit was. My sarcasm on
a forum can seem harsh sometimes. Grit doesn't help cocci but it does help
their digestive systems. If they had eaten something that was causing bloody
poop it could help (so I'm told).

As for knowing about Cocci I think most people don't learn about it until they
experience it. I only know about it because I read way too much before I got
chickens. Then I experienced the bloody poop thing, posted here about it, then
read more about cocci. There is no way you can know about all the different
medical conditions your chicken can get.

Keep her warm and give her plenty of water. Dip her beak in it to persuade her
to drink. Don't pour it in her beak. Try some yogurt like Fluffnstuff suggested.
This whole thing may just be a cooincedence.

It's amazing how stressful a sick chicken can be. Remember we all understand
and feel your pain.

Thanks for your help PC

Edit: I am now treating my bird with Sulfadimethoxine soluble powder (antibacterial) for oral use in chickens to treat coccidiosis................This may be where some of the confusion comes from me thinking cocci was a bacteria!!!!! :|
