I know Red Maples are toxic to horses... but donkeys? We have a big one here that shades our goats - they eat the leaves all year long - withered or otherwise green. Never had a problem.

We now have donkeys in this field as of today - it is winter, leaves are brown and on ground and rotten almost --- red maples supposed to be toxic in fall or when leaves become damaged and start to wilt (storm branches/etc.) ..... so not so scared now... but what about it?

Anyone have red maples in their pastures???

I would fence the donkey, horses, mules whatever, away from that tree, or eliminate it. The wilted leaves are the issue, and that can be a broken branch in summer too. if it's right near your house where you can watch it daily, that will be safer.
Some equines will decide that those leaves taste good ,and then get severely ill.
