I've been having a hard time trying to rid my coop of red mite. To cut a long story short I've tried all the prescribed methods permethrin sprays and powders, cleaning coop out every three days. I've smoke bombed and whitewashed! Nothing seems to have a long lasting result. I've seen some woodworm treatment that contains permethrin. Has anybody tried this?

Wild birds can spread mites, so you can never totally get rid of them. A good dusting area is important for chickens to keep external parasites under control. You need to treat weekly for at least 3 weeks to break the life cycle. You need to dust or spray all birds and roosts cracks and nestboxes. I would probably keep it up longer if you have a continuous problem. I haven't tried anything with wormwood in it, just a pyrethrin based poultry dust.

Can you get a hold of elector psp? Some mites in certain areas have become resistant to permethrin. Elector psp is expensive though, but if your mite problem is not going away, might want to see if it is available to use in the UK.
How long have you been treating for mites?

Here, permethrin spray concentrate is the easiest and least expensive treatment. It gets into all those nooks and crannies in the walls of the coop, and is easy to apply to the birds at night.
Spinosad also works fine, but is very expensive!
There's constant reinfection from wild birds too, which is often part of the problem.

I had mites and got rid of them with permethrin spray concentrate. I have been spraying the coops weekly because it does not kill the mite eggs so reapplying is necessary. I spray everything, floors, walls, ceilings, roost on and under, nest boxes inside and out, every crack and crevice. I mixed it a little heavy for the first spray. I read it on a blog.

Thanks for the suggestions. Sadly I can't get permethrin concentrate here. Or I can't find it if I can. I do have something called total mite which is 2.3%w/w permethrin. It works good but only seems to kill on contact. I can't get Elector psp either. I am dusting with ant powder as it is also the only powder I can find with permethrin in it! There seems to be a lack of effective treatments over here. The hens have all had ivermectin so they are ok. I think I'll just keep changing the shavings and using the spray and powder. Its just horrible going in the coop and finding another infestation somewhere. The woodworm treatment might be OK but it is only 2% permethrin but it might be better for killing the mite eggs. Idk. I'm at the end of my tether with the itchies scratchies now.
