RED MITES - had to condemn coop... questions, please help!!

That's true, I don't think DE will work, mites are hard to kill. Not all bug sprays kill mites either. I had really good luck this year with Nylar (by Martin's) and Permectrin II in and outside my house for what I figure was some kind of weird mite problem (I'm not even going to go into it). The Nylar is a growth regulator. I just mix the two up and spray problem areas down. I've sprayed the carpets in my house liberally with the Nylar and then use a combination of the two in the problem areas.

Metriphonate impregnated corrugated cardboard strip traps.

Then there is the same kind of trap used with very fine high silica content dust.

Both of the above require that the trap strips be out of the reach of the birds and that they be frequently changed out.

The corrugated cardboard provides cover for the mites and lures them to their death either via chemical poisoning or in the case of the high silica dust dehydration.

Both methods pose safety issues for the human applicators.

It is unlikely that total eradication will occur using either method.

Depending upon where you are the use of metriphonate may not be approved for use around birds. I have not found a withdrawal times for poultry.

OK I got my hands on a concentrate that has 12.5 g/litre of permethrin (also benzoic acid, sodium salt as a preservative) - it's called "the spider and insects destroyer" liquid spray.

So dilute and spray on everything to kill bugs, supposedly also mites.

BUT!

it says for outdoor use only and do not use in poultry houses or other animal buildings - then what's the point?

i thought permethrin was safe for mammal except cat (and fish)?

The flocks are a mess, under stress from being moved, I've done nothing else but run in circles trying to find a solution - the old coop is NOT going to be used again, i cannot imagine for the life of me getting into every nook and cranny to kill those bloodsuckers, so I'm trying to find other solutions.

I'm so tired and so discouraged, I'm about to throw in the towel and give up on birds - it's too much.

Name something terrible that can happen to a flock and I've been through it.

I swear we are CURSED.

Call the manufacturer and ask; chances are it may simply be that you need to keep animals away until it has dried. But there could be problems with some of the other ingredients, or with the concentration. Look for a product labeled for animal premises. You will often find these in the pet section, not the insecticide section.

good suggestion - their number is actually listed on the bottle, i called but their offices are closed so i'll phone again tomorrow morning.

i will also call the place where i bought my hovabator last year, they are specialised in poultry equipment so must have adequate products for red mite and other stuff...

what a nightmare

Order some Nylar from Amazon. They don't give you much but you only need about 1 oz for a 5 gallon sprayer. Nylar is an insect hormon that when the newly hatching mites come into contact with it they never fully mature. A couple of cycles of that and the population reverses itself. You might want to spray it every couple weeks in the coops until the problem is solved. It's very benign and won't harm pets although they say to allow it to dry. Mix it with the permectrin for an immediate knock down.

They say that permethrin is very hazardous to cats. So watch out for kitty. I think it's safe when it dries though.

WOW. Thank you for the info. I feel badly, I thought it was every two weeks. Although, i have never seen the pile of blood filled mites...I have seen the creepy crawley tan little bugs on my girls. The permeterin spay and dust has helped. I'm interested in the Nylar. Can it be used in conjunction with the permitherin or do you cycle it out between permetherin? Or just exclude the permetherin all together?
