Hi everyone, I am a newbie on a very hard learning curve right now, Hubby and I are new to chickens, Not new to livestock. Long and getting harder story short, hubby bought 5 chickens from a chicken trader ACKKK! The deal is done and now we are dealing with the problems these chickens have brougtht. On the upside, three of them have had there beaks chopped off and I am really nurturing so they will be well taken care of ...but I forsee extra work with them and thier fragile immune system...and the fact they cant scractch themselves very well....and they fact free ranging is harder for them and, and , and ! This beak cutting of business is REDONCULOUS AND WORNG...just sayin,
now the mites.

We have a HUGE mite problem that came with the new girls. We are doing a sevin dust shake n bake bath tonight. I am putting burt ash, DE and sevin dust in thier dust bath area, we are going to have to burn on all the straw and clean the coop with half alcohol half water spray then hit it with the sevin dust. My question is IS this enough? What else can I do and when do we do a follow up? Every 2 weeks, 1 week, 3 weeks?

PLEASE HELP!!!!
I am TOTALLY against this beak trimming business...if you need to do that just eat your bird....sheesh!

Started pullets (beak trimming) really limits chickens. They can't even preen properly. Thus the problems with mites and lice. Not that other chickens can't get em but at least they can peck a few of em off.

You may need a second dusting as you indicated. Getting rid of straw/hay and spraying will really help contribute to parasites dying. You can always sprinkle DE in around your coop to keep the parasites at bay.

Wish ya the best.

Thank You Den. We did the first round last night...that was fun....bwahhahaha!
It seemed to work though.
