Red Partridge Orpington informational hatch thread

I know it’s still early (12 days old), but just out of curiosity... any guesses yet? I’m worried that none of them look convincingly female ☹️ With the chipmunking so weak on a lot of them, would that translate into improper partridge patterning as well? Or is the partridge pattern an all or nothing thing?

Blinky (one of the assisted hatches, the one with the eye problem). His left eye seems functional and almost looks like the other one, but is smaller and he keeps closing it often, while the other eye remains open. Blinky has no chipmunk pattern whatsoever, and his wing feathers have the least amount of patterning of all of them. He also has the most prominent comb, and the most prominent personality... Which are all bad signs :(

The Pretty One (with the most pronounced chipmunk pattern and high contrast feathers):

The Baby (the smallest and least developed of the bunch, has too much black on the feathers which isn't a good sign):

If anybody is female at all, I'm guessing Pooh and the Pretty One, potentially maybe even Lemonade as well, if I'm being optimistic. Lemonade is the least people-social of the bunch. Blinky and the Baby look male to me based on the wing feathers (and Blinky's comb and personality).

Today was the big day when our surrogate babies moved out. 6 out of the 11 in the brooder (the ones with the hen can stay with her longer, but will eventually go back as well). So over half of the brooder inhabitants disappeared, and boy, did the rest of them feel it! I was completely unprepared for and floored by how hard they took it. Separation was at 4:30pm, and they spent the rest of the day in the corner closest to the staircase where their friends had disappeared, craning their necks looking out and crying loudly and heartbreakingly! They refused to do anything else - eat, drink, or even move out of that corner! They even refused to go to bed! It was getting dark and much later than their usual bedtime, and I tried to comfort them or put them under the heater, but they'd come right back out and go back to that corner and keep crying :hit Eventually they went to bed and cried themselves to sleep, much later than their usual bedtime. It broke my heart. I halved my flock last year, but not all at once and they were much older. The most I've done was 3 at a time with 5 remaining, and they didn't seem to notice or care. These guys though... They definitely missed their friends today! I should give them more credit. We'll give them extra love and treats tomorrow, poor things.

IIRC you hatched them for a friend?
Yep. The friend who lets me use her incubator. She gave me a bunch of eggs to hatch along with mine. We did this last year, too, and back then my chicks didn’t seem to notice or care when hers left, but it was a smaller reduction of the flock back then so maybe it’s just more noticeable now. My orps from last year seem to love change and got very excited whenever I moved them (they even lived in my basement for a couple of days amidst my neighbor drama) so I hadn’t yet experienced the “chickens hating change” thing. It’s pitiful. I hope they get over it soon, because there are bigger changes ahead...

My babies were still sad today. Subdued and hanging out in that corner by the stairs looking out, periodically crying. At least they went to bed fine tonight.

I went to visit their rehomed friends today and they are doing much better than mine! No crying, exploring their new digs, and they were definitely happy to see me 🥰 They are in one of those little prefab coops, which is acting as their brooder. They are in the coop part for now, until they get used to it, and will eventually go out into the run as well. The coop is a wooden box with no windows and no light except for a tiny vent slit, so I made them a HC screen to be hung in the open doorway during the day so they can get some sunshine. It can be hung all the way up, or partway down so my friend can reach in and take chicks out without the rest flying out. She runs an educational farm and will have school kids visiting and interacting with the chicks, so this setup works better for showing and handling them. I also made them a little perch and a MHP like mine. They seem happy.

Interestingly, last year my chicks hatched before hers did (she gave me eggs to hatch for her last year, too) and were much friendlier. This year, hers hatched before mine did, and hers are much friendlier. Do 2 days really make such a difference, or is it just random? The breeds are the same (orps for mine, barnyard mix for hers).

Maybe a field trip would distract them?
I use one of my crates to take them outside.
Good idea, I should take them out at some point. I have a dog crate I got for chicken purposes, I can use that. How long will they be okay outside without their heating pad? Only one chick has started feathering out on the back, the rest are still all fuzz but some feathers on the wings. It's in the 60s outside during the day.
