I have gotten redquill colored birds by crossing golden pencilled hamburgs with bb red kraienkoppes. I have not tried to see if they would breed true but really like the color, quality, and hardiness of that cross.

Are pure red quills just straight comb or pea comb

Red Quills in my book are a color-type in most instances rather than a breed so would not generally be associated with a particular type of comb. Exception would be with Eslin Red Quills that have a straight / single comb only. Not all red quill colored games are Eslin.
