Red Rum .... I mean ..... Red Bum

I haven't seen any of the others peck at her. The roosters don't even go after her like a few of the other hens, so she's not missing any feathers on her head or wings. Before June I thought maybe she was roosting in a nesting box instead of on a bar. But when my younger 9 got old enough to put in with the older ones, they would roost on the bars in front of the nesting boxes at night. I think because they were higher up & felt safer. Since then I see her roosting on the bars with the others.

I don't know if it matters, but when she first started laying eggs, last year, she was a little gimpy (we named her LG!). She started laying about a month before the others, more than half were soft shelled, & some days she'd even lay two eggs! She's more regular now, no soft shells, but they are odd looking.

No idea about the redness, but just wanted to say I have 1 or 2 Golden Laced Wyandottes that lay those very pointy eggs too. I always wonder if that's painful for them. Would be curious if any more experienced people can explain the pointy tips.

Some antipick lotions, or a bad tasting ointment such as Nustock or Bag Balm from the feedstore may keep anyone from pecking her. BluKote can cover up the redness to reduce pecking, but the eggs will be stained with blue. When feathers start to regrow, they will be very attractive if there is a picker. If her abdomen is painful from a possible reproductive issue, she could be picking her own feathers. Pictures of chickens with peritonitis and ascites, or tumors show reddened featherless bottoms. Here is a good article by Sumi about egg quality problems: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/common-egg-quality-problems

I would dust her with poultry dust or 5% Sevin and treat they area that she roosts in with the same or a spray. DE won't do anything!

I agree.
I've read that you can use a simple permethrim spray on the coop/roosts when you clean it out to help with an extended bug-free period.

It's possible that whatever this is, is causing an immune reaction and causing inflammation inside her body, compressing the Oviduct until causing the eggs to be more narrow (and thus pointy).

I use the Ultra Shield EX a few times a year in their stall & nesting boxes. I'm going to put some Blu-kote on her bum tomorrow. I have it for my horse, even though I never use it. Other than making them purple, should the eggs be ok to eat?

I feel like I've tried everything without luck. She was fine until after this hard winters molt & she started laying again in the spring. That's when we noticed it. Had her separated a while during the trials. She regularly lays her odd eggs, I've sprayed her a few times with poultry protector (I buy the concentrated & mix it to the strongest recommendation), Vetericyn, they get de-wormed in January & July.
I wonder if Eggcessive is right & she has some sort of reproductive issues going on? It happens with us ..... I guess if anyone has a purple beak that'll help narrow things down! :-D

Is the area bulging and hot? Is it beginning to get scabby? I had a maran(Copper) hen that would sit on the top roost at night. There was no room for the other one, and so she(Blue) would pluck at Copper from probably boredom and a bit of jealousy. Eventually, Blue began to make the area bleed and scabby. One morning, tornado warnings were being thrown and we ran out to throw the chickens in about mid-day. My mom saw that Copper's intestines had bursted through the scabbed area. We got them back in just in time and it was true horror doing so. She did throw up once...all over the bath room... as we flipped her over to stitch her up.
She is doing completely fine, but I try to inform those that have plucking problems. Of the horror they could end up through. We almost put her down, but just a bit of hope got us through.

(I think we had hope then, anyhow, here's "Hope")

She's alive and happy. Laying huge brown eggs. Lasted about 3 or 4 months so far. Needs a special "Diaper" like patch for her area- gonna try to fix one up for her. She lives by herself in a separate cage.
