If anyone can please tell me what’s going on with her I’d really appreciate it. A couple weeks ago the feather were all out on one leg. A few more days and all missing on both legs. Another week passed and now her belly is bald and red. I put antibiotic ointment on and there’s been no change. I don’t see feathers all over so this is all a mystery to me. I assume it’s painful yet she behaves normal. Please help!

Believe it or not, giving us your location, city, state, and country, gives us important clues as to environmental factors that may be contributing to a health issue.

A closeup photo is great, but another photo showing the area of concern while also showing the whole chicken give us context and more important clues.

Remember, you have the chicken in 3D and we only see her in 2D. You need to provide information to make up for one whole dimension lacking.

I live in Stillwater,Minnesota. Here are some pictures of her in the smaller run.

Can someone please help my poor chicken? I’m not on this site enough to know exactly where to post so I hope this is right. One of my black australorps looks awfully painful but behaves completely normal. She is 10 months old and shares a coop with 10 others all the same age. I live in Minnesota and keep the coops heated to above freezing. All others are fully feathered and healthy looking. Any ideas on what this may be and how to treat it would much appreciated!

I would isolate her and check for mites. Also, are the other chickens doing the feather picking? If they are, it can quickly escalate from just missing feathers to missing parts of the body. Chickens are ruthless.

But yeah, definitely isolate, check all over for illness (chickens can sense when another is sick), and feed well (lots of protein to regrow those feathers)

I'm also going to try and find some help

It looks like feather picking to me. Is there any overcrowding? What are you feeding? Are the chickens getting out to free range each day?

A possible skin staph infection comes to mind. Is this hen sleeping on the floor by any chance? If she roosts, what does she perch on? Describe it, size and material.

By the way, you may have noticed your other thread on this subject was combined with this one because two identical threads confuses and inconveniences people who are trying to work with other members to help you. Stick to one thread per subject, and you'll get far more responses.

They have plenty of room and things to keep busy. They’re pretty spoiled. They eat organic crumble and pellets plus fresh organic veggies and sometimes fruit. They get scratch and cracked corn and black soldier fly larva. No they are currently not free ranging as they’re not liking the snow. I am assuming they’re sick of being confined. There is plenty of room in their coop and the run has poly on roof and walls so they do go “outside” when is isn’t below 0.

She sleeps up on the roosts with the others. They have multiple roots made of 2x4’s. No pole style roosts. I am in and out a minimum of twice a day to collect eggs and check on them. I haven’t seen picking on one another other than the typical peck once in a while.
