We lost our polish first who was a small chicken 2 weeks ago. Today we lost sammon favriole who is a pretty stocky girl. We have a secure pen but on such a gorgeous day they love to be out. We happened to be inside when the commotion happened. By the time we had gotten out there she was gone. I hate to keep them in the pen but we have no choice...
I was wondering., is it alright to eat the chicken that was killed today?
:(:(

Well that is up to you. I like my chickens to rest for 3 days before eating. And if your asking if you should eat the chicken that was killed by the hawk.....again that is up to you. Bear Grills is glorified for eating long dead animals on his show. For most, it would turn their stomach. Can you? Sure. Do you want to? Your choice.

I guess I was wondering more if the meat would be bad because the adrenalin was pumping so quickly rather than resting. I know she has only been gone for about an hour. When you say rest, do you mean while it is alive or do you mean to let the meat rest? I'm a little ignorant to this subject...

No I don't think the meat is bad. I don't think that adrenalin in the last second or two will effect the meat as much as others do. But that is just my opinion. And I say that because when I process my flock, it seems to me that they all know what is coming. So there is no doubt in my mind they have some adrenaline pumping when they hear and see the other birds flutter their wings. If there is a lot of flesh exposed with dirt in it then I would say it was contaminated. And by resting I was referring to letting the meat set for 3 days after processing/butchering.

Sorry about the loss to the hawk. Wish ya the best.
