Red-tail I pulled out of someones chicken coop.

Are you a wildlife rehaber? I believe it’s illegal to have them if you don’t have a license, even if you only had him for a few hours.

I’m actually getting my license at the moment since I just recently took a job at a raptor sanctuary.

Better than a rehabber, I am a licensed falconer.

My assumption is someone that is a falconer has some formal training and is registered by the USFWS as such and able to keep approved raptors under approved conditions. You are jumping the gun. Keeping birds legally is not solely the realm of rehabbers; at least I hope not.

This is true. We have to find a sponsor (a general or master falconer) to sign the paper work, pass a written test (154 questions in my state), pass a facility inspection and then be an apprentice for two years.

The "falconers better than rehabbers" was a bit of a tongue in cheek joke by the way.

Love it.
Good work sir, and thank you for the photos! The kestrel in your avatar is beautiful.

How do you teach hawks to prefer rabbits?

A bit of a joke, they're opportunistic and will take whatever is easy. I should say through training and hunting I've built more confidence and skill in taking rabbits. The hawk likely could have returned right back to the chickens when I released it. But probably not.
