I live close to the airport here in St Louis and yesterday a airplane had to make a emergency landing shortly after take off after a red tail hawk was sucked into one of the engines.
This morning as my SO and I were sitting having our morning cup of coffee and the news guy just said it was a redtail I said to my SO as I jumped up to head out to take care of my chickens I said

"I have to go give the girls the good news"

Don't you wonder why birds don't fly away from planes, you would think they would view it as a big flying predator and fly the other way.

I would hazard a guess that the pilot made the emergency landing as a precaution after the "Hudson River" incident. Modern jet engines are capable of ingesting a bird with no real issues unless of course it is a multiple strike by bigger, heavier birds such as Geese. I don't blame him for putting the plane down though, in light of recent circumstances he was probably taking no chances with his aircraft and passengers.

Chris.

I wondered about that myself. I know I would go in the other direction.....unless they are like the Moose we have around here. No real predators, and so they get hit all the time becuae they are not afraid of the cars. Hmmm.

It like hitting a bird with a car, plane is moving so fast when the bird fly in front of the plane its far away. Plane are moving at very high speed.

Plus jets suck in anything near the front of the engine.

Those engines create A LOT of suction and birds just don't have the strength to fly away from them. In a plane that big, the pilot probably didn't even see the hawk. Now, in a smaller plane, you can definitely see those buggers and steer clear of them.
