if a red tailed hawk attacks your livestock in the state of california, can i shoot it? i see it circling around all the time and im concerend its only a matter of time before it gets hungry and attacks.

Call the department of Fish and Wildlife, and ask them. There may be info online from them also. Or ask your local police department on there non- emergency line and ask them.
 
All raptors are federally protected by the Migratory Birds Treaty Act. No, attacking livestock is not an exception, and it is also illegal to harrass them. Penalties are stiff.
 
I wouldn't recommend killing any raptor. They are aggravating as you know what, but it's our responsibility to keep our birds safe from them. Now if they start chewing through wire and breaking into the coop or run, like coons and other predators...all bets are off!
