We just lost our beloved 8 month old golden Wyandotte today to a red tailed hawk. If I had been outside just 1 minute earlier I could have prevented it. I threw a stick and screamed at the hawk just as it started to pluck her feathers. Now I'm down to 7. They love to free range but from now on it will be with one of us keeping watch outside with them. Make no mistake, chickens are not safe from hawks of any kind- especially during the winter.
