Red/yellow/black lesions in mouth, lethargy, wheezing, one eye shut, foam in mouth - RAPID ONSET - p

I am not very familiar with Canker as I have just run across it a couple times in this forum...maybe, do a little research on this. It could be wet pox, too...I'm also not familiar with that disease and it's treatments. I do remember that Fowl pox is not usually deadly. Did you try mixing up some crumbles, water and yogurt and feeding her that? Her mouth/throat may be sore and this would make it easier for her to eat. The great thing is...they get the water they need from the mash so you don't have to worry about water either. Maybe a baby aspirin for any pain she may be having. I wouldn't give her antibiotics as both the diseases I have mentioned are virus' and will not respond to antibiotics.

Good luck! Keep us posted!

Hi, I'm fairly new to chickens and disasters but wanted to let you know how sorry I am. I lost one of my older hens yesterday. Very sudden and unexpected.
No preditor, no signs of distress. I looked her over carefully. I buried her in my beautiful flower garden where she liked to dust herself. It sounds like you're doing everything humanly possible. Keep us all posted. Sue

I agree with Leadwolf1 that it's possibly canker. Treatment is metronidazole 250mg given orally for 5 days. It can be purchased online as Fishzole. Canker is contageous, usually passed in waterers. Monthly treatments of copper sulfate mixed in waterers for 3 days straight will keep it in check. Here's a link to mixing instructions, same treatment for blackhead:

To everyone else, thank you for your input and support... Skye just passed in my arms, right after I got her footprint finished. It was a huge struggle for her and I'm fairly sure she suffocated. If I hadn't been in tears and unable to react in any other way, I would've ended it myself, but I was shocked at how hard she was fighting to live. She's not hurting anymore, and for that I'm thankful. I had hoped she wouldn't have to suffer long, and she passed with her mother holding her close, telling her it was okay.

Is there any way to tell if that was canker or wet pox? Nobody else was sick but I will bring the water-er in tonight and sterilize it. I want to make sure I don't have to bury yet another of my family members anytime soon. This is two of my favorite girls that I have lost in less than a week.

Sorry you lost her. A necropry would be best to determine what exactly you were dealing with. You can contact your local extension office or state agriculture department to inquire how to go about getting a necropsy performed. Some states charge a small fee or no fee at all.

She's already been buried - I don't think one can be performed? Dawg, how should I best prevent this happening with any other birds? I don't want to treat everyone with tylan if they don't need it, but I will get a broad spectrum antibiotic if you think it will help. And I'll watch them closely.

If it is in fact canker, you'll need to wait and watch for the lesions to appear and treat accordingly as I mentioned in post #13. The only thing you can do now is observe your birds.

I'm sorry for your loss but, I'm glad you were there for her at the end
