Redinator's First Hatch-Along w Bonus Broody: Extended Edition

I seriously thought my black BYM was getting all the action with the girls because I saw him mount them often. Turns out my lighter BYM is the girls favorite. Unfortunately he's also a bit of a wild card when it comes to temperament. He's never out right attacked me, but tests me from time to time just to see if I'm paying attention. So far his chicks have been healthy and sweet so I'll just have to keep him a bit longer.

I thought about keeping goats for milk since I'm lactose intolerant, but I have no idea what I'd do with all the babies you'd need to keep the goat producing milk.
You're going to need about 30 acres for the amount of animals you need. Yes you need them because I don't have enough room for them so you can do it. I could possibly convince my neighbor to let me use her extra property for the animals and hey I am willing to share the goodies with them. I am limited to 99 chickens because of the law in the county. Any more and you have to have 500 feet away from all buildings ☹️. I need to have 2 hogs, goats, cows and sheep. I wouldn't have to worry about anything food wise. I'm starting a orchard and I already have my garden so I'm set.

Sorry, my wheels started turning again . . . .

Umm . . . does any know if there are solar powered brooder plates, or if there are any that connect to something other than a wall outlet?

I promise I'll wait til next spring to use it . . . (🤞behind back)
Home Depot sells solar panel outlets. Here in California they were 25.00 but might be more now. Temu does have some solar lights and fans but not sure about heating

I'm glad there's no hard limit here. I'm at 46 with the new chicks and I just started in December.

I know I'll be selling my 5 RIRs after the 8 and 9 week olds are old enough to go in with the males. In that batch I have 8 Black Sexlinks and only plan to keep 4 with the best temperament. That'll put me at 37.

I'm not sure what I'll do about the males in the 2 batches of new chicks I just hatched . . .that depends on temperament. I obviously can't keep them all, though.

I was looking around and saw the solar lights and fans, but I have yet to see a brooder plate that accepts a barrel plug. I have a small solar panel that might work if I could find a way to connect it to a brooder plate.

I haven't ever really liked my bsl until today but tomorrow might be a different day. My 2 RIRs are amazing and sweet. Darlin could be removed from my property without me even knowing about it. I wish I would have just stayed with them. I lost my favorite young cockerel and a pullet. They were so sweet.

My reds are tempermental on a good day . . . they were also only the second batch of chicks I got so I was still a bit worried about over handling them, so it could just be the way they were raised.

I didn't know if I should handle them and hang out or not but then I asked her and I was given the information I needed. I started talking and cooing to them and now WOW, what an amazing difference it made. Even at the age yours are you can still bond with them as long as they are not cockerels. I wouldn't get rid of my girls unless I they pass away or they are cockerels. I know that life takes control of us but with the chickens they become our children so we need a bond just as much as they do. I know you can do it even with your crazy life right now you can definitely build the bond with your girls and possibly the boys.❤️👌🥰
