here's the coop me and my boyfriend built today. we used an old dog kennel (5x15x7), then zip-tied 1" chicken wire all around the bottom with 2" overhang, deer netting zip-tied over the top and finally blue tarp over the nest boxes. inside, i have an x-large dog kennel, an x-small dog kennel (both with fresh grass lining), feeder, waterer, grit and small perch. it's pretty redneck looking, but the chickies love it!! (i also spread a snake repellent around the coop)

it's so much fun to see them running around, scratching, eating bugs and grass and just having a good time, hopefully they go to bed ok.

I think its a good idea...i'm gonna have something like that for my chicken tractor.(only much smaller)...and move them around the yard during the day..and put them in the coop at night..good idea with the crates also...i'll use mine also now..lol..thanks..Wendy

thanks everyone!! well, the chicks have made it through the night without any predator action. it's even sprinkling right now and the chicks are dry under the tarp! i'm so happy with my coop and run, it works great and will hold many more birds!! my boyfriend and i are going to build a roo coop this weekend, i'll be sure and take pictures of it. this redneck coop is going to be the hens coop.

feel free to steal my ideas! it's actually a compliment

Some more Red Neck "Coops, Great. I was feeling lonely for awhile. Good job!
By the way if you think a Barbecue is a bag of Barbecue potato chips and a bowl of Barbecue souce to dip them in, then you might be a Red Neck.

Great... just be careful as predators liek weasels can make it right through the chain link. Happened in my coop even through I have it lined on the sides, top and bottom!

DO you have the top covered? I have mine covered with deer netting but my friend lost hers to a raccoon that way, so I shut mine in at night.

I'm going to build mine out of scrap lumber, calked up with mud (we have nice thick clay here--perfect for adobe). I might get a couple of old wrecked cars towed in and parked out front of it, just to complete the look.
