Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone here has chickens in Redondo Beach, CA? I saw a few comments during my search of people mentioning they live there. From what I can tell the laws do not allow for chickens unless you apply for an exotic animal permit. Am I right? If so, did you apply and pass the permit inspection? Or are you just "flying under the radar" so to speak?

Thanks!

Go here and search for fowl.

Most of the rules seem to be nuisance for sound stuff. I do not see a permit process

This is what the city website says:

Nondomestic Animals
  • Certain nondomestic animals must be permitted by the City of Redondo Beach.
  • You must have a separate permit for each nondomestic animal maintained in the City.
  • Redondo Beach Municipal Code 5-1.401 defines exotic nondomestic animals.
    • Nondomestic animals include any animal which is customarily kept for agricultural purposes including but not limited to chickens (including birds bred for fighting or other sort), ducks, pigs (including Vietnamese Pot Bellied pigs), goats, horses, cows, minks and ermines or other animals bred for fur, sheep, turkeys, geese.
How do I obtain a permit for my exotic or nondomestic animal?
  • Request a permit application from the Animal Services Unit
    • By mail
    • By obtaining an application at the Animal Services office at the Redondo Beach City Hall, 415 Diamond Street, Redondo Beach, CA 90277 Door 2, or download the online permit application.
  • Complete the application and return it to the Animal Services to arrange property check.
  • It is a misdemeanor violation to maintain a nondomestic animal within the City of Redondo Beach without a permit.

It sounds promising!

You should check into the permit process

It's just a one page document where you write down what kind of animal it is, if it bites people, etc and then request a home visit. It isn't very specific and says you have to do it for each animal which seems crazy for chickens. I'm sure I could pass that part, but I know most towns want you to keep your coop a certain distance from your house, yet there's no rules about that here. That's why I wanted to talk to someone who has gone through the process. I'd hate to do all the work and buy a coop and chicks and then be denied the permit because of some unwritten rules.

Did you check the local state thread down there?

I've searched through old threads, but there aren't any that had a satisfactory answer for my my town and its laws. I am in a suburb of Los Angeles between a town that is 100% no chickens ever and one that only recently started flirting with the idea of reversing their ban. This "exotic animal permit" seems like it might be a way in, but I'd like confirmation from someone who has successfully obtained the permit.

Redondo Beach laws? 1.You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you. You have a right to an attorney, if you can't afford............... AH,never mind
Those are your rights, not their laws! :lau :gig

Have you found out anymore about the permit fee, if it is $45/chicken or flock, and if there are any rooster limits etc?
