Redstar w/ waterfilled/bloated belly, graphic pic pg3

I've seen them at the feed store, but they are huge! I thought they were for cows & horses.

I just went through this last week! my hen was bloated for 2 weeks b4 I did the deed. Get a syring like the size they use to draw blood from us with a fairly good sized cc holder, birds cant feel pain like us ,inject in lower belly suck out fluid,go in 1/3 w needle.I did this 2x,then the 2 holes drained 4 6hours,bout 1cup Igot.I also bathed her in warm water and blow dried her,she loved it! She was back on her feet with in hours though It took days to fully recoup, jumping, running. Good luck

Out of the 19 Golden Comets I've had for nearly two years, only two are left. I think Red Stars and Golden Comets are the same and most were gone before they hit three years old.
Nearly every hen had this problem. When we've done autopsies, most were internal layers. The mass that was in one a few months ago was enormous - about 4" wide.

Good luck with her

fowlgirl, the smallest size they had was a '22' whatever that means.
I hope it will work. I did get a big syringe. Not sure really how much to drain...when to stop or where exactly to place the needle, but I'm going to give it a try.

Blue Moon, I have also found that my Red Stars drop like flies at two years, once these last few are gone, I won't get anymore, I just can't stand the heartbreak. I have another in the coop with a rock hard abdomen and a very pale comb. I keep trying to find a vet who will just give her a shot and put her down, but no luck. I wish there was a foolproof, painless way tpo do it that doesn't involve gore and trauma.

ok, here I go. Wish me luck & thanks everyone for your help.

I drained about half the fluid, but then my hands got to shaking so bad, I stopped. She appeared much more comfortable and ate some treats, even looked around with some interest. Today, she is just sitting down under the heat lamp, but is pooping again, so I guess I removed enough to keep the pressure off her organs.

Does anybody know what happens next?

Was it just a clear water? If so, that's a good sign that she's not laying internally, just filling with fluid. If some of the holes continue draining on their own, the rest will drain out. If not, go back for another round of draining once you've stopped shaking. As you can tell, it gave her such relief. Once all fluid is drained she will have a sort of empty bag hanging down for a few days till it tightens back up.

It was clear, but yellow, like urine. Is that bad?
We're going to go for round two tonight......
