I've been searching the forums, but can't seem to find a good answer to this, so thought I would start a new thread.

Does anyone have experience with using redwood fronds in the run floor? I always have an abundance of these in my yard so would love to incorporate them if possible.

I'm building out the elevated coop and integrated run now. I've dug out a pit for the floor, and I'm figuring out what to fill it with. Thinking dirt, wood shavings and fronds. Good idea? Bad idea?

I'm in Northern CA.

Thanks!

Dug a pit?
I hope water can't run into it.
Can you post pics?

To clarify!

I dug a pit for a few reasons:
  • Laying in concrete blocks for a foundation on sloped ground
  • To bury wire around the perimeter
  • AND to create a deep bed of soft soil for the run floor. This "pit" will be completely filled back in with dirt, wood shavings, and *maybe* redwood fronds depending on what experienced people have to say about that =)
Drainage is pretty good as the ground slopes away from the area. There shouldn't be any low areas remaining for water to collect in.

Some shouldn't hurt, especially if they are dried(not sure how sappy redwood is).
I suggest mostly coarse wood chippings to reduce odor from poop.

My runs have semi-deep litter(cold composting), never clean anything out, just add smaller dry materials on occasion, add larger wood chippings as needed.
