refrigerating eggs

I was talking to someone who had been down in S America. He said they don't refrigerate their eggs. He said he had put the eggs in the fridge, and when he came back later they were out. He put them back in, and they put them out again. He said they said that they keep longer if you dont put them in the fridge. Something about if you put them in that starts a breaking down process?

They keep longer in the fridge, but they do just fine on the counter for a few weeks. Mine all sit on the counter in a pretty basket until we're ready to eat them.

Did you see Martha Stewart's show? She had this really neat ceramic-looking tray to keep her eggs in. She said she had them made for a previous show, but was thinking about getting more made. BUT, since you said you keep yours in a basket on the counter, I think I'll do the same thing. Different colored eggs are so beautiful!
